Pizzeria e Trattoria DA ISA
Pizzeria e Trattoria DA ISA

Pizzeria e trattoria da ISA is a very authentic Italian style pizza place in Nakameguro. Their pizza is delicious. They make it fresh to order and we enjoyed both the margherita (their most popular pizza) for 1650yen and the 4 Formaggi (quatro cheese pizza) for 2350yen. This place is famous amongst foodies in Japan because the owner, Hisanori Yamamoto, has won the world pizza championship in Naples Italy for 3 consecutive years in a row — Yamamoto was the first-ever to win this championship 3 times in a row.

The restaurant is constantly crowded. We got there right when the restaurant opened at 5:30pm and we barely got one of the last few walk-in seats. Even though it wasn’t necessarily a comfortable and relaxing dinner, we enjoyed the quality and style of Yamamoto’s pizza. If you are ever in Nakameguro, definitely make a reservation and give it a try.

Patisserie Cote Du Bois

This small patisserie is located very close to the Ghibli Musuem. They only have 10 seats and they serve the most deliciously perfect sweets. We tried the ‘Jardin Fraisier’ (いちごのショートケーキ) for 450yen as well as the ‘Seasonal Fruit Tart’ (季節のタルト) for 480yen. They were both made to perfection and left us wanting more… Wish they made the cake size larger…sigh*

DISCLAIMER: This restaurant/cafe has sadly closed on December 14, 2012 :(

If you are craving for healthy greens or just simply good vegitables, come to GREEN in Daikanyama. This sweet spot is very popular amongst women and young moms with children. Although they had a few open tables when we got there, we had to wait about 30min to get seated because the tables were reserved (be sure to make reservations if you are coming here for lunch on the weekend). I’ve also been here for dinner but didn’t have to wait to be seated at all in that case.

The colorful vegitable plate called the “4 kinds of Deli Plate Set” which lets you choose any 4 dishes from the deli display. The set comes with soup, all you can eat bread, and a drink for 1500yen. The other picture you see is the “Mozzarella and Tomato Spaghetti Set” which comes with soup, salad, and drink for 1500yen as well. The quality of their vegitables and dishes were really good and it’s easy to see why it’s so popular. The ambiance is also very nice with vaulted ceilings and an open and airy feel.

Chankonabe Shinzan
Chankonabe Shinzan

Have you’ve ever had chanko nabe (Japanese stew) before? It is commonly eaten by Sumo wresters here in Japan but it’s basically a type of hot pot. It’s the perfect thing to eat during the winter-time in Tokyo. This was actually my first time trying chankonabe and I definitely enjoyed it. This restaurant is located in a very hidden spot (it felt like we were in someone’s apartment) in a side-alley of a street. Shinzan (心山) has a few different types/flavors of chanko nabe, but is most famous for their delicious curry-based chanko nabe. The chef used to be a sumo wrestler himself, and there’s a lot of sumo related artwork and famous wrestler’s autographs decorating the walls throughout the restaurant.

We had a course menu and it was SO much food — but all GOOD. Overall, It was delicious and a great experience having our first chanko nabe :)

PS: Since the place is so small, reservations are a must.

{  Ippudo Ramen  }

Ippudo Ramen
Ippudo Ramen

Ippudo ramen is famous for their tonkotsu-based (pork) soup which originated from Hakata, Japan. They are located through out Japan, and in recent years, they have branched out to locations internationally such as Hong Kong, New York, Singapore, and Seoul (though their international locations have slightly different menus).

Depending on the location, there are lines out the door, and during lunch it’s usually hard to get a seat. If it’s your first time, I recommend you try their “akamaru” or “shiromaru” ramen with a side of gyoza – so good! If you are craving a spicy ramen, try their “Ippudo karakamen” — for which you can specify different levels of spicyness (I can only go up to level 3!). I also love that they have a wide variety of condiments and side dishes so you can mix up the flavors. For example, they have takana, ginger, crushed sesame seeds, garlic etc. The moyashi (a free side-dish) that is on the table is slightly spicy but is one of my favorite things to eat before having ramen.
