Yakitori Akira is not your traditional Yakitori with skewers. It’s more of a “Chicken Cuisine” and it’s a place where you can eat raw chicken (aka chicken sashimi). Located in Nakameguro by the river, this smokey chicken house is quite happening (only open for dinner) and it gets quite loud. Seating is on the floor so for those of you who are not used to sitting on zabuton you may find it a little difficult to dine for a few hours.

This was actually my first time eating raw chicken and I personally didn’t like it that much. But for those of you who enjoy it or would like to try raw chicken, they have a fresh selection so you may like it more than I did. We ordered the 3800yen course and it was quite filling. They also have a grill that you cook your chicken and veggies on which is called a shichirin(七輪) and it gives this beautiful smokey flavor to the chicken which was good.

My favorite part was the tamagokake-gohan, which you basically swirl your raw egg onto your rice with a little bit of soy sauce and it’s delicious. (Tamagokake-gohan is an old school way to eat rice and it brings back memories of my childhood.) The course ended with matcha green tea ice cream and overall it was a nice experience but since I’m not that into raw chicken, unfortunately it wasn’t one of my favorite places. If you’d like to try raw chicken though, this is definitely the place to go. Also, during cherry blossom season, this restaurant gets quite packed as they have a beautiful view along the river.

Hope you are all enjoying this beautiful time of the year. Cherry blossoms are in full bloom in Tokyo right now and it’s just something we look forward to every single year. Everyone is just in a more cheerful mood and you see more people out and about. Just like last year, here are some photos from Yasukuni Jinjya (Shrine) and Meguro River :)

btw, for those of you who are traveling to Japan, you may have noticed that everything is a little more expensive as Japan’s sales tax went from 5% to 8% starting on April 1st, 2014. Unfortunately, it’s set to go up again to 10% by October, 2015…

Cherry blossoms bloomed a little early this year in Tokyo and we had a beautiful warm weekend filled with gorgeous flowers. If you’re in Tokyo now until hopefully next weekend, you are in luck to see these beauties at their prime. Too bad cherry blossoms only last about 1~2 weeks… but that is why it’s a highly anticipated event and season here in Japan. We had a cold winter this year so i’m very happy that Spring is finally here :)

Taste AND Sense

This cafe is my favorite new find around town right now. It’s about a 5~7min walk from Nakameguro station and it’s where fashionable creative and designer types seem to hang out. This cafe recently opened (in June 2012) and it’s produced by a clothing shop called “1LDK” which is across the street. The cafe is also connected to a new clothing/interior/home decor shop from the same owner.

I fell in love with not just the design of the space (especially the beautifully carved custom wooden chairs) but their food as well. Their food is simply delicious… The menu is very small but they do it really well and I am giving this place a four-star rating because the Rosmary Chicken Cocotto that I had was really a stand-out. The chicken is so juicy and soft, the side dishes were great, and it comes with a drink of your choice all for just 1260yen. What an amazing deal for this level of quality and freshness of food. The portion is not bad either. I haven’t tried their other dishes yet but my friend is coming to visit me from the US next week so this is one of the many places on my list to take her!
