Sadaharu Aoki is known as one of the Top 3 pastry chefs in Japan. He is based in Paris but has a few store locations in Japan and one of them is inside of Shibuya Hikarie.

Ever since Hikarie opened in April of 2012, Sadaharu Aoki’s “Tokyo Yaki Macaron Chocolat” has been the most sold dessert inside of Hikarie ShinQ’s sweets floor. People stand in long lines to purchase this limited edition item since the “Tokyo Yaki Macaron” is only sold at the Hikarie ShinQ location.

Last year they sold the “Tokyo Yaki Macaron Chocolat”(381yen) which had a chocolate macaron on the inside covered by a matcha cake on the outside.
This year, it’s reversed, selling the “Tokyo Yaki Macaron Matcha”(381yen) which has a matcha macaron on the inside covered by a chocolate cake on the outside.

I was expecting it to be uber sweet but it wasn’t as sweet as I expected. Give this popular item a try if you’re near by Shibuya Hikarie. Since the initial buzz has died down a bit, you probably won’t have to wait in a line anymore which is nice.

{  Cafe Kaila  }

Cafe Kaila

This is probably the Hottest cafe for pancakes in Tokyo right now. Cafe Kaila came from Honolulu, Hawaii and they supposedly received the “Best Breakfast” award 2 years in a row in Oahu. It recently opened in Meijijingumae/Omotesando and is located on the B1 floor of the same building as CHANEL, BVLGARI, and the MOMA design store.

This place has the longest line I’ve seen for pancakes. Yes, longer than ‘Eggs ‘n Things’. It’s easily a few hours wait but perhaps it’s a bit less crowded if you go on a weekday. We happened to be in the area over the weekend and decided to check it out hoping that it wouldn’t be too crowded for dinner. We arrived at 7:15pm and guess what? They said their last order is at 7:20pm and the restaurant closes at 8pm but if we eat fast, they would let us in. Woo hoo! We delightfully agreed and went inside. We were so surprised we got to eat at Cafe Kaila without waiting.

We ordered their famous pancakes for 2000yen, which is a bit expensive but it’s also got quite a large volume with a generous serving of fruits on top. I am happy to report that it does indeed live up to the hype. The pancakes were great and I would come back here if the line wasn’t long. Their breakfast burrito plate (1700yen) with Italian sausage (extra 50yen) was also good and we were so satisfied with our meal here. They are impressively on top of their service too. If you are into pancakes and/or want a good breakfast, come here!

How adorable are these donuts? They don’t just look good, they are tasty too!

Floresta donuts as a company has a great environmentally friendly philosophy and they are trying to make the most natural and kind donuts for your body. They use safe, organic, local ingredients with no additives/preservatives and they are also careful with how much waste they produce to reduce their negative impact on the environment.

Their donuts are not the typical sweet style like Mr. Donuts. As soon as you try one you will notice it’s more on the health conscious side but they are still yummy and satisfying as a dessert. When I first discovered these donuts, I fell in love with them and wished they had more locations. The fact that they are constantly switching up the flavors every time I visit their shop is fun too. They rotate their daily selections as well as their seasonal donuts and special animal decorated donuts.

Yocco's French Toast Cafe

Yocco’s French Toast Cafe, a new place inside Trainichi (a cute little plaza in Jiyugaoka), opened last month (March 2013) with a concept of serving the best french toast in Japan. The place has a cute decor and it felt like it was going to be a promising experience.

We ordered the “French toast with poached egg and cheddar cheese” for 1400yen and the “Yocco’s Special French toast ~Scrambled Egg with Coquette Gratin of Seafood~” for 1400yen. Both came with maple syrup, red wine vinegar syrup, and pepper. We were so excited to try our plates but I have to say it was just OK. Our food sadly came served cold and the french toast wasn’t a stand out. Perhaps it’s because they are new so they may need a little more time to iron out the kinks. Their dessert french toasts looked good though so it might be worth a shot for dessert instead.

I’m not really into parfaits but I had the most beautiful and delicious Sakura parfait (9ooyen) from this cafe in Sangenjaya. Apparently it’s a seasonal dish which changes every month so you may not be able to try this exact one, but they are famous for their impeccable parfaits. The one I had was more Japanese style and it wasn’t too sweet but still sweet enough with a great texture. It was full of surprises from beginning to the end and I loved every bite of it.

This cafe opens at 2pm which is a little weird and they only have one menu item for lunch, the pasta lunch for 1200yen which includes a bite size dessert and coffee or tea. The pasta was also delicious so it seems the chef has been trained well. On the negative side, one of the waitress had a bit of a strange attitude which made the service feel below the typical Japanese standard level. Also, it’s a small cafe located in a regular residential building, so they won’t allow customers to wait for an opening if the restaurant is full. Despite the obscure location, it seems to be quite popular since we saw many customers turned away who were even willing to wait. Thankfully we arrived a little before they opened so we were seated with no issues. With that in mind, I recommend coming early or making a reservation if you want to dine here.
